YouTube manages billions of video assets using a globally distributed Content Delivery Network (CDN). To ensure optimal performance across devices, YouTube automatically generates multiple resolution targets for every video thumbnail. These range from "Default" (120x90) to "Maximum Resolution" (up to 1280x720 or 1920x1080).
Asset Architecture
When a video is processed, the CDN assigns a unique `videoID`. The thumbnail assets are then mapped to specific subdomains, typically `img.youtube.com` or `i.ytimg.com`. Our tool utilizes the internal aliasing system to directly access these static assets. By bypassing the player interface, we can retrieve the raw image file in its highest available bitmask.
