FAQ

Do I need a YouTube API key?

No. Thumbnails are publicly accessible static files — no API key, login, or account needed.

What resolutions are available?

We show Ultra HD (maxresdefault), High Definition (hqdefault), and Standard (sddefault). Not all videos have all sizes.

Why is the HD thumbnail unavailable for some videos?

The maxresdefault thumbnail is only generated for videos originally uploaded in HD. Older or low-resolution uploads may only have the standard thumbnail.
